I pilfered my son's iPod for my Million Brochure Walk yesterday. At least it felt like a million brochures. I started with fifty Campaign 12 brochures stuffed in my backpack and two boxes each of Cellu-Sculpt, Imari fragrance, SlimWell peanut butter crunch diet bars, and Planet Spa mud mask samples - stuffed in my trusty kilt. The bars littered my left butt cheek with small rises like huge hives, and I realized that my body imitated a horrific Before photo for both the SlimWell and Cellu-Sculpt products.

Fifty brochures. Such a long walk for a drop in my catalog bucket. I turned the corner of my street and walked toward the condos framing the lagoon. I passed the faux French Country style Bel Age elder care facility, and listened to two dogs barking behind the stockade fence. I opened a SlimWell bar, took a bite, and chucked the rest over the fence. Snarls and scurries and one yelp later the dogs were silent. I left a brochure swinging on the fence gate, one finger print of peanut butter staining the cover.

A little girl in a Catholic school uniform sat on a glider seat at the edge of the condos. Her long dark hair lay on her shoulders in two pigtails tied with green ribbon. Her mom is one of my regular customers. I waved.

Halliburton and its subcontractors deny mistreating the men, but their allegations of exploitation have reverberated throughout India. The new charges come after graphic images of American soldiers humiliating and sexually abusing Iraqi prisoners have been splashed across Indian television screens and newspapers for a week. Taken together, Indian officials said, the allegations have further dimmed the already remote chances that India might send troops to aid the U.S. effort in Iraq. The brothers and two friends of theirs are among hundreds, possibly thousands, of workers from developing countries employed by U.S. corporations and their subcontractors in Iraq. Foreigners are also employed by U.S. companies or subcontractors in Afghanistan.

The Rise of Third-Party Design and Verification Resources
by Zaiq Technologies, Inc.
With today's short time-to-market development cycles, rising costs, and shortage of technical personnel, many companies have turned to third-party resources for ASIC, FPGA, and SoC design and verification. (August 8, 2001)

Developers: Nonlinear Neural Nets Smooth Wi-Fi Packets

Posted by timothy on Tuesday May 04, @06:18PM
from the for-the-occasional-always dept.
mindless4210 writes "Smart Packets, Inc has developed the Smart WiFi Algorithm, a packet sizing technology which can predict the near future of network conditions based on the recent past. The development was originally started to enable smooth real-time data delivery for applications such as streaming video, but when tested on 802.11b networks it was shown to increase data throughput by 100%. The technology can be applied at the application level, the operating system level, or at the firmware level."

Linux Smartphones On The Rise

Posted by timothy on Tuesday May 04, @04:53PM
from the mwa-ha-ha dept.
nostriluu writes "I know, some people want their cell phone to just be a cell phone. To those people, I suggest a second hand phone. For those of us who want to cram as much functionality as possible into a device we are going to bother carrying everywhere, there is the promise of the Linux Smartphone. I've had a P800 for over a year now and while it's great (although a brick), I can't wait for a Linux based device to bring the culture of openness and upgradability, as opposed to the intentional obsolesence and $10 for every little utility someone reinvents for "closed" devices."

Projected 'Average' Longhorn System Is A Whopper

Posted by timothy on Tuesday May 04, @04:01PM
from the save-your-cans-for-the-rebate dept.
greg_barton writes "At first I thought this was a joke, but this article from Microsoft Watch confirms it: 'Microsoft is expected to recommend that the 'average' Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.'"

Gas Plasma Antennas Help Wi-Fi Security

Posted by michael on Tuesday May 04, @03:11PM
from the hearsay dept.
mindless4210 writes "Markland Technologies has developed a new gas plasma antenna technology which could help to secure wireless networks. The technology allows for highly directive and electronically steerable digital data transmission via solid-state semi conductor based plasma generators. A plasma antenna can reposition itself at very high speeds, as well as change it's beamwidth and bandwidth, creating spatial and spectral security features which are not presently available with conventional WiFi antenna technology."

why oh why is this not working:
he Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is moving past Ethernet and Internet Protocol in its vision of cheap, low-power, ad hoc mesh networks that are five orders of magnitude more efficient than 802.11 networks in the enterprise space. To this end, DARPA is contributing at least four significant programs, including the development of connectionless networks through the use of new physical layer chips and protocols that could facilitate a 300 percent reduction in energy needs for communications; an investigation of networks that can tolerate delays based on NASA research; and the creation of systems capable of automatic real-time scanning of airwaves for available spectrum in which to erect or demolish ad hoc networks. DARPA's Preston Marshall said that this last project "opens up hundreds of megahertz of new spectrum without new licensing," adding that DARPA is a participant in the FCC's cognitive radio program. Marshall's support of DARPA's vision at the recent Wireless Ventures conference was in sharp contrast to projections that even cellular nets will eventually be overtaken by Wi-Fi nets in the race to capture the consumer broadband market.
